This 3-year apprenticeship programme provides structured workplace training, technical education, and practical experience while preparing learners for a nationally recognized trade qualification.

Apprenticeship Overview

Successful applicants will be appointed as either:

  • Tractor Mechanic Apprentice
  • Earthmoving Mechanic Apprentice

The apprenticeship lasts 3 years and combines:

  • Practical workplace training
  • Technical college studies (where applicable)
  • Distance learning
  • Internal AFGRI technical training
  • Supplier product training

Training Programme

During the apprenticeship, learners may:

  • Attend Practical Training Institutes
  • Complete distance learning modules
  • Attend Saturday classes when required
  • Receive product-specific training
  • Work alongside experienced technicians
  • Develop practical mechanical skills

Training is supported through:

  • AgriSETA
  • MerSETA

Probation Period

The first 6 months of the apprenticeship serve as a probation period, allowing both AFGRI and the apprentice to assess suitability before continuing with the full training programme.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Administrative skills

Compulsory School Subjects

Applicants must have passed:

  • English
  • Mathematics or Technical Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy is not accepted)

The following subjects are advantageous but not compulsory:

  • Physical Science
  • Engineering Science
  • Engineering Graphics & Design (EGD)
  • Diesel Trade Theory
  • Motor Trade Theory

Duties and Responsibilities

During the apprenticeship, successful candidates will:

  • Learn to repair tractors and earthmoving machinery
  • Perform maintenance and servicing
  • Assist with equipment diagnostics
  • Support workshop operations
  • Assist with stock control
  • Deliver excellent customer service
  • Complete general workshop duties

Important Information

  • Training is provided at no cost if all training phases are successfully completed.
  • Failed modules or phases must be repeated at the apprentice’s own expense.
  • Apprentices sign a 3-year apprenticeship agreement.
  • A work-back period applies after qualification.
  • The apprenticeship contract cannot exceed 4 years.
