Gauteng Examination Assistants X277 & Quality Assurers X1,260 Posts 2026 – Applications Now Open

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has officially opened applications for Examination Assistants and Quality Assurers for the 2026 examination period.

This is a major opportunity for registered tertiary students, unemployed graduates and unemployed people with tertiary qualifications who meet the academic requirements.

According to the official Gauteng Examination Assistant e-Recruitment portal, there are 277 Examination Assistant positions and 1,260 Quality Assurer opportunities. Applications opened on 26 August 2026 and close on 8 September 2026.

Examination Assistants will be placed at the Head Office and examination district offices across Gauteng.

Quality Assurers will work at designated marking centres, including schools in Alberton, Johannesburg, Florida, Randburg and other Gauteng areas listed on the official application portal.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants need an appropriate recognised academic qualification, which may include:

• Senior Certificate
• National Senior Certificate (Matric)
• National Certificate Vocational (NCV)

However, simply having Matric does not automatically mean everyone can apply.

The Department specifically states that applications are open to:

• Registered students at tertiary institutions
• Unemployed people with one or more tertiary qualifications
• Unemployed graduates

Applicants should also possess strong numerical skills, with Mathematics or Accounting as a compulsory subject. Students who are in their second year or above at tertiary level will have an advantage.

Do You Need Previous Experience?

The application asks candidates to indicate any previous experience they have as an Examination Assistant, whether office-based or at a marking centre.

Applicants should be capable of working under pressure because examination administration involves strict deadlines.

Examination Assistant Duties

Successful Examination Assistants may be responsible for:

• Receiving examination scripts
• Checking and controlling scripts
• Scanning and packing scripts for marking
• Checking the number of scripts and marksheets
• Identifying and addressing discrepancies
• Preparing scripts for the correct marking venues
• Creating marking-centre files
• Assisting with dispatching scripts
• Receiving marked scripts
• Controlling and archiving scripts for retrieval

Quality Assurer Duties

Quality Assurers will assist with the examination marking process.

Their responsibilities include:

• Receiving and distributing scripts to marking teams
• Controlling scripts during marking
• Scanning examination scripts
• Checking that all questions have been marked
• Checking that marks have been added correctly
• Ensuring marks are correctly transferred to the front of scripts
• Checking totals
• Ensuring marks are correctly transferred to marksheets
• Addressing discrepancies with marking teams
• Reconciling and organising scripts for archival purposes

Who Cannot Apply?

This part is very important.

The Gauteng Department of Education states that the following people may NOT apply and will not be considered:

❌ People writing National Senior Certificate examinations in 2026
❌ People writing Senior Certificate examinations in 2026
❌ People writing AET examinations in 2026
❌ People who have taken the VSP
❌ People who are employed elsewhere

Questions You Will Be Asked When Applying

The official application system asks applicants questions relating to:

• Whether they passed Matric or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
• Whether they are currently registered as tertiary students
• Their current or highest year of tertiary study
• Whether they passed Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy at Matric or tertiary level
• Whether they passed Accounting at Matric or tertiary level
• Their previous experience as an Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer
