Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Minimum ABET Level 4, Grade 10 or Grade 12 certificate
- Ability to read and write
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Physical fitness to perform strenuous cleaning duties
- Willingness to rotate between wards and departments
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays
- Honesty, reliability and a strong work ethic
- Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals and equipment
Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices will be an added advantage.
Cleaner Duties and Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining a clean, hygienic and safe hospital environment.
Duties include:
- Cleaning floors, walls, windows and doors
- Cleaning furniture, lockers and beds
- Cleaning curtains and blinds
- Cleaning wards and departmental areas
- Cleaning corridors and entrances
- Removing litter and waste
- Disposing of waste according to hospital waste-management procedures
- Cleaning staff and patient kitchen areas
- Cleaning refrigerators and microwave ovens
- Washing dishes, cups and utensils
- Safely using and storing cleaning chemicals
- Maintaining cleaning materials and equipment
- Immediately cleaning spills to prevent accidents
- Replenishing soap, toilet paper, deodoriser blocks and air fresheners
- Completing cleanliness checklists
- Signing attendance and delegation registers
- Reporting maintenance defects and hazards
- Reporting shortages to the supervisor or unit manager
- Following infection-prevention procedures
- Maintaining occupational health and safety standards
- Performing other reasonable duties delegated by the supervisor
Working Conditions
Applicants must be prepared to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.
Cleaners may also be rotated between different wards and departments according to operational requirements.
Because hospital cleaning can involve physically demanding tasks, candidates must be physically capable of carrying out the required cleaning responsibilities.
